Le Grand Bornand - France June 2015
Le Grand Bornand - France 20th - 30th June
Welcome to Le Grand Bornand, scene of the 2015 French Rally and what a scene. Our part of the camp site was two terraces on the opposite slope, across the river but well within walking distance. The rally was organised by Angie and Andy Cavell (minimally assisted by Peter and I) and those running the site, Catherine and her family, could not have been more helpful.
Everyone was officially welcomed with wine and nibbles on Saturday evening, when Catherine joined us with a present of a pot plant for every van attending. This brightened up the area no end with and a variety of devices appeared to accommodating the plants.
Daphne Normandale invited everyone to her 80th birthday party (can you believe it!) on Sunday evening, where she and John provided wine and nibbles and the ralliers presented her with a cake, courtesy of Angie, Catherine and the local boulangerie.
There was so much to see and do during the 10 days, with a free bus service to take people up and down the valley, the cable car and chair lift to take everyone up and down the mountain and clear blue skies gave a wonderful view of Mont Blanc from the top. Not to mention a very good restaurant at the half way point. There were paragliders a-plenty leaping off mountainsides and going off in all directions and whilst there was the opportunity of going tandem to try it, being the sensible people we are no-one took up the offer.
A trip to Annecy included a guided tour of the old town and a boat trip on the lake, and was a huge success, though a bit tiring – we were all a bit quiet on Tuesday evening. However, Thursday evening involved more wine and nibbles before each going our separate ways for our evening meal. Saturday was a cheese and wine evening and Monday was a group BBQ which involved – yes you’ve guessed it more wine……….
A boules tournament was run throughout the week with the final on Monday afternoon, a closely fought match between Les Davies and Glenys Bradley and Angela and Bob Warwick, with Angela and Bob the eventual winners, who were duly presented with ……. a bottle of wine. Listen, you can’t go to France and not take advantage of the very good and very reasonably priced wine now can you?
The BBQ evening was rounded off with the raffle, thank you to everyone who donated prizes, and a game of ‘Left, Right & Centre’ thanks to Liz Irvin for bringing her dice. I actually won this game and ended up with around 150 cents in 1 cent pieces – thanks.
In addition to all of this there was quite a bit of star gazing going on (from the comfort of a cosy duvet), together with cycling, walking and swimming for the energetic amongst us and just plain chilling for the rest of us.
Le Grand-Bornand is a charming town in a part of France, the Aravis Mountains, which Peter and I, and most of the other ralliers were not familiar with, so on behalf of all of us I’d like to say a big thank you to Angie and Andy not just for an excellent rally but for introducing us all to a beautiful part of the country.
